Anti-Procrastination-Training

Postponing tasks is a present topic in our society. In a study in Germany it was found that only 2% of the respondents did not experience this behavior. The basic tendency of people to prefer short-term rewarding activities and to reduce unpleasant feelings such as displeasure, boredom and fear is known from motivational psychological theories and studies. Therefore, many people postpone the tasks they would like to avoid. If this behavior occurs occasionally, it is usually not a problem. In the case of chronic postponement, however, this may point at a work disorder (see self-regulation disorder).

Procrastination should not be confused with laziness, as those affected suffer from being unable to cope with their tasks. Further, chronic procrastination can have many negative consequences in the long run. In addition to an inefficient work attitude, those affected often suffer from external (job, school, study, exams, etc.) as well as internal (self-inflicted) pressure.

It can seriously affect people's general well-being, happiness, self-esteem and future time perspective. Many chronic procrastinators struggle with feelings of stress, psychological problems and even physical complaints.

Although basic human needs play a large role in the development of procrastination, it is a learned behavior. Affected people repeat the same behavior several times and opt for the short-term reward (avoidance of the unpleasant task) and solidify their behavioral pattern. Fortunately, the behavioral patterns that have been learned can be unlearned and replaced by new behavioral patterns.
